If you have heard the term REPREVE when buying your fabric and garments, here are some things you need to know:

First, REPREVE is the fiber or material being used. It isn’t the fabric nor the finished product. REPREVE is made by Unifi, a family of synthetic fibers containing recycled materials. It produces 300 million pounds of recycled polyester and nylon fabric annually.

Unifi launched REPREVE in 2007. REPREVE has become the most recognizable brand for recycled fiber because unlike other recycled yarns it is certified by an outside party.

Since it started, Unifi has helped recycle more than 14 billion plastic bottles. It aims to recycle 20 billion plastic bottles by 2020 and 30 billion plastic in 2022.

How REPREVE is made

PET plastic bottles are recycled and collected in order to make REPREVE. The bottles are chopped, melted, and reformulated into a recycled chip. The chip goes through a proprietary extrusion and texturing processes to form the actual REPREVE fiber.

Why REPREVE is better

There are environmental benefits in every pound of REPREVE produced such as:

  • It conserves enough water to provide one person with more than the daily drinking water requirement.
  • It conserves enough energy to light a compact fluorescent light bulb for nearly 22 days.
  • It limits greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions while driving a hybrid car almost 3 miles.

Sportek gets its REPREVE yarn from Unifi and then weaves them into various eco-friendly fabric products. The finished fabric is either sold as pure 100% REPREVE or weaved with nylon, polyester, or spandex.

Sportek REPREVE polyester fiber has a number of performance technologies such as wicking for superior moisture management and thermal regulation for outdoor functions.

The list of Sportek REPREVE products includes sportswear, yoga wear, swimwear, activewear, running wear, jerseys, shirts, shorts, and jackets to name a few.
