Women need more support when it comes to sports garments. One of the biggest difference factors with a women’s body is their breasts. If there is no support with the breast it will be difficult to function and move the body. The sports bra supports and compresses the breasts so the women can move more efficiently without any distraction. The first Sports bra was actually invented in 1977, by a woman who heard complaints on exercising in bras. Three women teamed up:  Lisa Lindahi, Polly Smith and Hinda Schreiber at The costume shop of Royal Tyler Theatre at the University of Vermont was where they created their “sports bra” which was called “Jockbra/Jogbra” at that time.

In 1990, Platex purchased Jogbra from Lindahi and her other partners. Researcher Christine Haycock from University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey measured breasts movement of women running on treadmills. By collaborating with bra manufacturers she was able to create a wide band at the bottom of the bra for extra support and firm straps to minimize the bouncing of breasts. In 2001 she persuaded Oprah Winfrey to try out her sports bra. The bra went viral once it appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show with good reviews.

The basic design structure of the sports bra is a tank top cut in half at the bottom part. This combination makes the shorts prevent odors, keeps the skin dry and bacteria from growing on the skin.
